Hospitals are already managed by the government to ensure lower costs. Now, VA hospitals need to be restructured in order to ensure our troops are served with the best medical care possible. This type of restructuring has already begun when U.S. Army Maj. Gen. George W. Weightman was relieved of duty at Walter Reed Medical Center on March 1, 2007. Fortunately, the government has the ability to regulate these hospitals- enforcement they do not have with privately operated facilities.
When VA hospitals are operating efficiently and effectively, we can open more of these hospitals across the country. Additional military troops can be trained in the medical profession to operate these extra facilities. In addition, volunteers can help provide basic functions at these hospitals in exchange for credits they can use for health care coverage. Eventually, we canextend the care VA hospitals offer to cover the entire American population.
