Students are assigned to a given grade level based on their age rather than their aptitude. Consequently, some students in classes are frustrated because they cannot keep up with their peers. Meanwhile, other students in the same classes are bored because they are not being academically challenged.
A new approach would be to assign students to classes based on their academic aptitude. Classes or grade levels would be composed of students of varying ages. All students can succeed. However, students should not move forward based merely upon their age, since students learn at different rates. This new approach allows students more time to spend on the same subject matter if they need it. Also, students could be allowed to advance as they progress.
